The Makgadikgadi Pans are at the southern end of the Great Rift
Valley that runs the length of Africa. The pans are also reputed
to have once been part of the Zambezi Valley before geographical
changes shifted the flow to its current course. This is traditional
outdoor safari life, albeit with a few home comforts. Jack’s is the
only desert camp in the Kalahari and overlooks the huge horizons
of the famous Makgadikgadi National Park. Evoking the original
East African safaris, Jack’s Camp is professionally run and
comfortable. Rustic tent accommodation features individual open-air
private bathrooms complete with flush toilets and showers suspended
in the palm trees. Persian rugs, bone handled silver, copper basins,
damask tablecloths and cotton sheets add to the comfort of guests.
Guests can enjoy a comprehensive desert experience and the
opportunity to walk with Bushmen trackers who provide a unique
connection between their culture and the natural environment.
During game walks and drives, zoologists and biologists explain
the adaptations of desert wildlife to the area.
The adventurous camper can take quad bikes into the saltpans
and explore remote archaeological sites. In the wet season,
the pans fill with water forming one of the most important
wetland sites in Africa and attracting flocks of flamingo
and waterfowl as well as Southern Africa’s last surviving
zebra and wildebeest migration. This is also one of the only
places where one of Africa’s rarest and most endangered carnivores,
the brown Hyaena may be seen.
