Only a hundred years ago, the Karonga people spoke of Garonga, "the big tusked one",
who roamed widely across the land before Man’s encroachment destroyed his environment.
Today we are witnessing a wildlife renaissance with wildlife species, including
elephant, white rhino, lion, kudu, waterbuck and a variety of other African creatures
returning to the land in abundance. Garonga forms part of the Makalali Wildlife
Conservancy, which lies between the Kruger National Park and the Drakensberg escarpment.
Nestling at the foot of the Mpumalanga Drakensberg Mountains, Garonga is a sanctuary
for those seeking to nourish and rejuvenate their souls. The twelve-bed camp is a
tribute to the natural flow of African living. Earthen columns, plastered walls and
soft natural fabrics have contributed to the creation of a North African oasis. Each
of the six en-suite rooms are situated on the banks of a watercourse and command
beautiful views. Camp amenities include an open plan living area, swimming pool,
aromatherapy sala, conference facilities and amenities for the disabled.
Garonga is a holistic wildlife experience, providing the opportunity to guests to get
in touch with, to relax, and cleanse the soul. Whether engaged in tracking animals,
learning about the trees, birds and the ways of nature or sleeping out under the stars,
Garonga has created a safari for the soul.
