| When Ernest Hemingway swashbuckled his way through East Africa on the hunting safari that inspired his book, Green Hills of Africa, he made camp in the shade of giant Fever Trees where hot springs bubbled from the floor of the Rift Valley. His guides called this camp "Maji Moto", KiSwahili for hot water. He described the area as "the loveliest that I had seen in Africa". Today, on the exact spot where Hemingway pitched his tents, lies Maji Moto Tented Camp, on the shores of Lake Manyara. | | | The canopied main lounge area and viewing deck | | | | Maji Moto is an exclusive 20 bed secluded camp overlooking the shores of Lake Manyara. Just ten tents are secluded in the shade of a small evergreen forest of Mahogany, Wild Mango and Fig trees. The large classic safari-style tents are erected on raised platforms. The tents are aglow from soft lighting and feature en-suite bathrooms with separate showers. | | | Secluded tents in the forest | | | | Manyara is one of the best places to see a wide variety of wildlife at close range.
