With the amalgamation of the two entities signalled in its title, this club was able to extend and renovate its clubhouse and completely remodel each of its two courses. The result is a facility, which amongst SA’s private clubs is a second to none as regards quality, amenities and comfort. The two golf courses (East and West), which complement each other perfectly, have long been high on the list of Johannesburg’s premier venues; however it is the longer east course, one of the Robert Grimsdell’s most celebrated designs, which has always had the limelight and the lion’s share of our most significant championships. |
The East course is laid out on truly beautiful golfing terrain, the land falling away quite steeply on the north East towards a water course which becomes a significant challenge on five holes of the back nine. An astonishing variety of mature trees separate the fairways so that the playing experience is one of leisured serenity. Dressed in its autumn finery (May and June), Royal Johannesburg and Kensington’s trees are soul-string sight. The East course has the distinction of featuring two of the reputedly longest par fours in golf, the 474m 10th and the 457m 11th. Many a championship has been decided over this correspondent duo. |
